Attending Wake Of Someone You Do Not Know

My husband believes that it is not appropriate for someone to attend the wake of someone that they did not know personally. I was under the impression that it is appropriate to attend if you know the family, out of respect, even if you do not know the deceased. We have had this discussion before, and i would love to hear your thoughts on this matter.
