Baby Shower Diaper Raffle?

I think I know this answer but... I still want to ask in case there is hope. My cousin is throwing me a baby shower. she had not spoken much about her ideas and what she planned on doing, so I left it alone. I just thought it was great she offered.

I received my invitation and forgot about telling her how great it would be to have a diaper raffle until after the invites went out.

I had a diaper raffle for my first child and it was GREAT with how much we saved on diapers. My question to you is... Would it be tacky to send out an addition to the invite through the mail regarding a diaper raffle or to send out a cute email after all invites have gone out saying there will be a raffle?

So Happy Life, if diapers are the "most needed" gift, just ask for diapers AS the gift. Go ahead and call us all "old Hags"…that's a great excuse for those who do not have good manners, expect others to PAY for your expenses….if you can't afford children, DON'T HAVE THEM!!! A baby shower is to welcome a new baby into the world with a nice LITTLE gift…not subsidize the kid through it's first year of life!! Asking for THREE gifts…yes, you are asking for THREE gifts…the shower gift, the diapers and the book is really greedy and bad manners…don't try and spin it any other way!!!

Judge Much NEW

All of you sound like wrinkly, old miserable hags. "Tacky" is in the eye of the beholder. At my shower, we did a diaper raffle and no one batted an eye. In my opinion, it's not even really a request, it's a fun game to play with your guests that rewards them for something most of them would have brought anyway - the #1, most needed gift - diapers! Nobody is saying "Bring a pack of diapers to receive entry to my shower." Seriously, you guys need to get your Depends out of a wad and get over yourselves. You're probably the same lot of holier-than-thou old bags that thinks putting your registry information on the invite is tacky too. If you have a problem with someon's shower, then don't go. Oh wait, that's probably rude too. But, hey, showing up with a stick up your a** is perfectly acceptable!

Diaper Raffle NEW
by: Anonymous

This ploy to obtain a gift on top of a gift is one of the rudest things I have yet to encounter. The original invitation gave the store registry info which is also against etiquette. To make matters worse the email advising of the "Raffle" was sent a week before the shower asking for diapers and wipes. As I had all ready purchased a generous gift I found this highly offensive to be ambushed with an additional $15 charge.
This extortion is offensive on so many levels. How did a shower to welcome the baby become such an outright money grubbing affair? What about those guests that don't have the funds? What has become of manners and common couresty toward your guests?

showers only for first child NEW

Why not send out a secondary notice informing your guests to the diaper raffle. While you're at it you can also inform them you would prefer them to just start signing over their paycheques because you can't be bothered to pay your own way through life.

This is not your first child, therefore having a shower is very tacky. The point of a baby shower is to help new moms-to-be prepare for the arrival of their first child.

The other big question is why are you having a SECOND baby shower? It seems these days too many people want to solicit for gifts!

What is more important to you?
by: Eunice replies

There are no hard and fast rules about etiquette about this.

It depends on what is more important to you, risking being slightly inappropriate and possibly making your guests have those thoughts OR saving money on diapers.

Not having the baby shower diaper raffle is probably the more elegant choice.
