Best Mother's Day Gifts

elegant mother a mothers love

I've thought long and hard about the Best Mother's Day gifts. Though some people might feel 'Mother's Day' is too commercial, I'm still grateful somebody decided to devote a day out of the 365 days to commemorate mothers.

I've always been a Mummy's girl. I enjoyed picking out presents for my mother over the years. Some years when I was busy, I simply sent flowers. Sometimes I wrote a card. And worse, other times I made a phone call. I've never forgotten because I'm grateful to all the advertising you see and hear during that time.

What makes the best gifts for mothers day?

Your actions and words of love.

Material things come and go, flowers die but it is the memory that is kept. After I moved out of home and lived overseas for many years, my mother was packing up her old drawers and found her stash of my many letters I wrote to her as a girl. She scanned them in and sent it to me. I was quite embarrassed at first, because of the childish topics I wrote about, the ugly drawings and the many many spelling errors.

But you know, all she saw was love. Her heart swelled with pride and joy.

I was too self-absorbed and made her promise not to show those (embarrassing) letters to anyone.

A while later, God gently nudged me in my heart and I looked past my silly insecurities. I felt an overwhelming love and sense of gratitude that she was my mother. She gave me so much even before I could ever give back. It is the first real unconditional love we know.

So back to the topic of the Best Mother's Day Gifts. I've realized it was not the Gucci bag I gave her, the many bouquets of flowers and chocolates, the crazy balloons I hid in her toilet that she remembered. She remembered my letters. She treasured those silly drawings and stickers. Why? Because they captured your thoughts, love and they continue to speak to her today.

So I'd say, continue to give great gifts to your mother. A holiday, flowers, honey jars - they are all great gifts for mother's day but don't forget to write her a nice long letter with unrestrained thoughts and words of love and thank yous. Don't forget to call and just talk.

It is true when my Pastor said 'a child can never love her parents more than they love her.' At that some time, when you love that person, you'd want to have a relationship with him/her. You'll want to talk. You'll want to listen. You'll want spend time.

A nice long letter of love will be treasured and will speak when you're not around. There is a time for everything so why not just make this Mother's day a time to write a letter that will be read over gingerly many years down?

I was really touched when I read this article, by Francesca Harper who wrote quotes by her late mother. It is the first Mother's day without her mother.

"You're so pretty."

--The last words my mom said to me before she died.

Be good to your moms, everybody! Happy Mother's Day!

Because that is what my beloved grandmother, too said to my mother before she passed away.

She also writes, "

This Mother's Day will be my first without my mom, who died last June. So, if your Mom is still alive, I can't stress enough how important it is to make her feel special while you still have the chance. You'll have the rest of your life to regret it if you don't. Forget all the wrongs she may have done to you, just for one day, and realize she is the only mom you'll ever have. No one will ever love you the way she does."

How great is a mother's love.

If you're a mother, I honour you. You have the most important job in the world.

And Mom, if you're reading this, I love you very much and I wrote this page thinking of you. I'm glad God chose you to be my mother. We'll always be together! XOXOXO (that means kisses, Mom.)

My Favourite Quotes On Mothers

"A mother understands what a child does not say." - unknown

"I regard no man as poor who has a godly mother." Abraham Lincoln quotes

And my absolute favourite!

"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts." Washington Irving

My Mother's Gift To Me

Something my mother gave me many years ago and I know it helped her expressed what she could not say in her own words. Best part is, I know. And from time to time, I like to hear it again. That's why I want to return the best mother's day gifts!
