Cash Gifts Instead? Is that Appropriate?

Ma'm,

My sons,27 and 25, asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I suggested a new pair of dress boots would be nice. They looked but could not find the pair that I had in mind, so for Christmas they gave me cash so I could buy the boots myself.

They're fine young men and I'm grateful for the gift but is cash an appropriate gift to give ones father?
