Husband does not want to attend my Grandfathers funeral

by Rella Birdfeather
(Santa Cruz, CA)

Let me start by saying my husband is a nice sweet sensitive guy. BUT he works construction and will be off work next week so he does not want to take Wed-Fri off this week to fly to my Grandpas funeral.

It's in the same state so the tickets are cheap enough. I was not that close with this grandpa, however, I am very close to my mom and my aunt who are grieving the loss of their father. I am also the minister doing my first funeral service, for my Grandfather.

I feel like he should show his support and respect for our family by appearing, although I do understand that sometimes you have to make sacrifices due to finances. What is your take on it?

Thank you,

I wish your husband would go.
by: Eunice

Dear Rella,

Ideally, I wish your husband would go, but we are also unable to make someone do anything they wish not to do.

My sympathies are with you... I suggest just focusing on comforting your mother and aunt and downplay the fact that your husband is not there, or does not wish to go.

In fact, keep that to yourself (that he does not want to go) and graciously hold your own while you are there.

That is all we can do for now, and sometimes a miracle happens and he goes. Otherwise, it's best focus on the most important, your mother and aunt.
