Is a potluck okay if I can't afford to have a big party?

Dear Miss Manners,

I would like to give a big party for my soon to be married daughter, but I really can’t afford it. Would a potluck be alright, and if so, how would I word the invitation?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Check Out Budget Casseroles and Self Do
by: Anonymous

I would check out budget recipes for casseroles that serve a group and do not break your budget.

Another alternative is to bake inexpensive desserts and invite a group for coffee and cake

I wouldn't ask guests to bring a dish unless with the group you're inviting you have customarily brought dishes to their gatherings and such is the norm.

Likewise, figure that if anyone wishes to contribute one of their favorite recipes, they will ask you.

It is you that wishes to have a party for your daughter, but if you cannot afford it, just have your daughter over for dinner with her future husband.
