Is it ok to refuse food?

I have a few pounds to lose, and some days I have the wherewithal to stay away from sweets.

Is it ill mannered to refuse food when someone asks if you'd like a donut and opens the box for you? I never know if it's ok to say, "No, thank you. I really don't need that, though it looks delicious."
