Is it rude to use your index finger to emphasize a point during a discussion?

by Susie Q

My husband and I had friends over for dinner. After everyone had finished eating, we started a discussion, which had various viewpoints.

I felt strongly about my viewpoint, and while voicing my opinion, used my index finger, pointing out, to stress my opinion. My husband felt my finger pointing was extremely rude. I felt it wasn't since I was intending simply to stress a point and was not pointing at any individual.

I have seen this type of gesture done numerous times on T.V. and while listening to others at work. My husband feels this kind of gesture is not meant for "casual" conversation. I have always stressed the importance of manners and my husband seems determined to point out I have been rude! Is this gesture with my intent rude?

Perplexed,

Pointing is rude?? BFD!! NEW
by: Validator

Dear Elites,

While Americans ignore daily black-on-black murder and urban genocide in every major US city; while Europe struggles being invaded daily by terror cells posing as refugees; while Iran and NK weekly threaten the existence of their neighbors with nuclear extinction; the spectacularly ignorant - even to this day - complain the pointing of a finger is rude???? Are you efing kidding??

JHC is there nothing else more important then admonishing the evil 'finger pointers' in society??? People point to be understood; Big F*cking Deal! Get an efing life!

Sincerely, and with warm regards,

Who. Cares.

Pointing your index finger... NEW
by: Anonymous

Pointing your index finger once to prove a point is not rude. Of course there is a time and place for discussion, I'm assuming you were among friends who know and love you. Over doing anything is plain annoying, but an occasional finger point is fine. I love a good discussion and can get very animated. My friends just laugh at this and we continue on. There's nothing wrong with being opinionated as long as you respect other people's opinions too. If they had a problem with it, its their responsibility to talk with you privately.

STOP POINTING
by: Anonymous

IT IS ALWAYS RUDE TO POINT NO MATTER WHAT SO TRY STOPPING IT. I WILL TAKE IT ONE STEP FURTHER TO SAY PEOPLE WHO DO IT ARE INSECURE AND THAT IS WHY THEY CHOOSE TO THINK THEY ARE SUPERIOR, HOWEVER IT IS ONLY THEIR OWN SHORT COMINGS AND INSECURITY WHY THEY DO IT. KNOCK IT OFF, IN MY DAY IT MEANT YOU WANT TO GO AT IT IN A PARKING LOT. PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK IT IS OK BECAUSE THEY SEE IT ON TV BUT REALLY....GET A REAL LIFE STOP POINTING THE FINGER!

Your Friends Will Know You Are Not Being Rude
by: Eunice replies

Your intent is not rude and I'm sure everyone at that table knows you are not being rude.

In a setting with strangers though, you might come across forceful and highly opinionated. It is better to put the finger away in all conversations, unless you are doing a presentation. Even so, one of those laser pointers would suffice.
