Is it rude to use your index finger to emphasize a point during a discussion?

My husband and I had friends over for dinner. After everyone had finished eating, we started a discussion, which had various viewpoints.

I felt strongly about my viewpoint, and while voicing my opinion, used my index finger, pointing out, to stress my opinion. My husband felt my finger pointing was extremely rude. I felt it wasn't since I was intending simply to stress a point and was not pointing at any individual.

I have seen this type of gesture done numerous times on T.V. and while listening to others at work. My husband feels this kind of gesture is not meant for "casual" conversation. I have always stressed the importance of manners and my husband seems determined to point out I have been rude! Is this gesture with my intent rude?
