Perplexed in Mass! Should I send a wedding gift if I'm not going?

Is one obligated to buy a wedding gift if not attending the wedding? This is a work situation where several co-workers are friends outside of work and several are not - but everyone got invited.

Some of us think if you decline to attend the wedding, you are not obligated to send a gift and others feel that EVERYONE who is invited to a wedding should send a gift.

p.s. We all gave shower gifts even though some of us didn't attend.
