Refinement when being yelled At.

by Mercedes
(Texas)

I would like to have wit, and peace when someone is yelling at me. I have a terrible tendency to retaliate and say something an elegant lady would not say. I ought to forgive that person, and be humble. Not to say, I'll let them walk all over me. One must set boundaries. However, I would like to do this in an elegant way and it is something I am truly trying to develop in my character.

A Sticky Wicket For Certain
by: elise

This is a "sticky wicket" situation. I have had this displeasure. It is best in my opinion to first take a deep breath and smile (even if it kills you ;) and remain as composed as possible. In a situation like this it gives you time, and then suggest in a polite and firm way that it is really not the time nor the place to have the conversation (because the truth is they want an audience )and offer "perhaps someother time" knowing another time is unlikely. In a similar situation I've done this and then softly addressed the people to the side of me " If you'll excuse me please" and left.
I hope this will help you. Often the most expediant thing to do is to just excuse yourself and gracefully leave. Remember it wasn't you that was rude in leaving,it was the impropriety of the other person. So in doing so you are seen elegent and poised and the other person is left to their own bad manners.
