Unlock, but don't Open

Unless it's a man who I know very well and have a good relationship with, I don't lean over at all. I have one gentleman friend who I will lean over and unlock the door simply to save him time. He is fully capable of doing it himself, but it is my way of giving him a kind gesture. It's never been an issue for either of us. I don't actually open the door, I just unlock it. And, if the unlock button is out of my reach where I have to lift off my seat to reach it (like in his SUV), I will leave it to him.

If the logic is that the guy can just do it himself cuz he has keyless entry, the man shouldn't open the door for the woman, either. It's about the gesture. Not whether it's necessary or not.

A Lady Should Not Lean Over

I agree.

These days most doors are automatic anyway. Even if his door is locked, he can open it himself with his car key.

It really defeats the purpose if the lady has to lean over. It puts her in an awkward position, not to mention, it hardly looks ladylike at all. It might also be hard for her to do so if she is in a delicate dress, with a delicate hairdo and accessories. She might as well open her own door if that is the case.

When travelling with your friend, you could just humour him by leaning over or suggest that you can open your own door.
