Should a woman lean over and open the car door for the man?

My friend and I have a disagreement.

He feels once he opens/closes the car door for a lady, she should lean over and open his door. I told him that would be the polite thing to do if the door was locked to unlock the door but why should she do that if the door is already unlocked?

I am confused NEW
by: Anonymous

Nowhere have i heard anything about a woman opening a door for a man. I simply say thank you to show my respect and appreciation for his gesture. I'm thinking it's stupid to crawl over a seat to open his door cuz unless you have go go gadget arms ( and i do not) it is not gonna stay open anyway.

Open the door for each other. NEW
by: Anonymous

Chivalry is less about tradition or looking lady like, and more about the feeling it produces in the person you are being chivalrous to. I feel special when my fiance opens the car door for me. It makes him feel special when I lean over and open his door. So when he is a gentleman and opens the door, I return the favor. It makes us feel happier with each other and more in love in that moment <3

man up NEW
by: Anonymous

men today have no sense of chivalry.
the other comment was right, stretching over the middle of the car doesn't look lady like and completely defeats the purpose of chivalry.
Men, man up. the point of chivalry is for men to treat ladies like ladies.
The point is to be a gentleman. Being a lady comes with it's own rules, but stretching across the car isn't one of them.

Should a woman lean over and open the car door for the man? NEW
by: Lee Benten

There is nothing wrong if a woman open the car door for a man. It does not matter whether the door is locked or unlocked but making the door open is just a sign of caring. Car Care Tips.

true test NEW
by: Don

The Italians in new york would use this as sort of a test. When a man would take a woman out on a date he would unlock her side only and let her in then close the door and if she did not lean over and unlock (not open) his door then it was a clear sign that she was NOT a selfish/selfcentered individual and worthy of a second, third date and possible marriage partner. Trust me men you don't want to marry a selfish woman, you'll be catering to her until hell freezes over and your own needs will never be met.

Unlock, but don't Open
by: Anonymous

Unless it's a man who I know very well and have a good relationship with, I don't lean over at all. I have one gentleman friend who I will lean over and unlock the door simply to save him time. He is fully capable of doing it himself, but it is my way of giving him a kind gesture. It's never been an issue for either of us. I don't actually open the door, I just unlock it. And, if the unlock button is out of my reach where I have to lift off my seat to reach it (like in his SUV), I will leave it to him.

just the same

If the logic is that the guy can just do it himself cuz he has keyless entry, the man shouldn't open the door for the woman, either. It's about the gesture. Not whether it's necessary or not.

A Lady Should Not Lean Over
by: Eunice

I agree.

These days most doors are automatic anyway. Even if his door is locked, he can open it himself with his car key.

It really defeats the purpose if the lady has to lean over. It puts her in an awkward position, not to mention, it hardly looks ladylike at all. It might also be hard for her to do so if she is in a delicate dress, with a delicate hairdo and accessories. She might as well open her own door if that is the case.

When travelling with your friend, you could just humour him by leaning over or suggest that you can open your own door.
