How about letting your husband's friend dictate the length of stay? Since no one is sure how the treatments will be tolerated, maybe you could plan to stay the 3-4 days but be prepared to move to a hotel/entertain yourselves with other activities if the friend cannot handle visitors for the entire length of time.
