Unfortunately, We Enforce Our Taste On Others by: Eunice
Is this an Asian wedding?
If so, please read the etiquette guidelines on my Chinese etiquette page (on the lower half). This type of wedding gift is cultural. It is in fact rude to give a wedding gift instead of a red packet if you have attended the wedding dinner.

If it is not an Asian wedding, it is generally frown upon and considered distasteful.
However, you can only control or be responsible for your own good taste.
If this is what is requested for, write a cheque out for the amount you would have spent on the wedding gift and insert into a congratulatory wedding card.
It will be rude to ignore their requests and turn up with a wedding gift, which you can probably assumed it will be returned and cashed in.
