Wedding Showers for Second Marriage

by Angela
(Erie, PA)

HI

My name is Angela and I have a question regarding wedding showers. After high school I got married. My wedding was by a justice of the peace and had a small reception for immediate family only at his parents house. I never had a bridal shower never had a stag and drag etc.

Divorce was finalized 6 years ago and I am getting married again. This time I want to go "all out" and have the reception with everyone there and wearing the fancy clothes etc. I have 2 children with Tim the guy I will be marrying and I was wondering if it's ok to have a bridal shower for myself.

Angela--Best Wishes for your second marriage. I can understand wanting to experience the wedding dress up game and the hoopla. But I can't help but look backward and say: the origins of the wedding shower tradition were a way to help a young couple to start the married life together and have the proverbial pot to cook in, so to speak. Since you have already produced TWO CHILDREN with the groom-to-be, one can only assume that the two of you have been playing house for some time now. I think having a shower or wanting gifts is yet another example of the total lack of awareness of the reason for the rituals, running rampant in our society. Complete lack of propriety and class. Sorry...

Shouldn't do it for yourself, Tacky...but I would see if any of your attendants would do it for you.

I figure everyone should have at least one bridal shower and 1 baby shower in life....

You didn't get one the first time around. I would still register somewhere and be reasonable with the items you place on it. Anyone involved in the first marriage will know you didn't have a shower and your are not being greedy at all.
