When the talker tries to get a certain reaction from you

I fell awkward when someone tells me something that makes them react a certain way and they reiterate the part in the story that creates the reaction as though I don't get it.

I feel as though I'm suppose to respond in a way that says I would react the same way in that situation. Also, it makes me feel that they feel that I "don't get it" because I wouldn't react the same way.

How can tactfully handle situations like these?
